Amazon vs Walmart Jobs in Canada: Pay, Benefits and Schedules Compared

Amazon and Walmart are two of the largest employers of hourly workers in Canada, and many job seekers apply to both. The jobs are quite different, though: most Amazon hourly roles are in warehouses and delivery stations, while most Walmart roles are in stores. This guide compares what each company publishes about pay, benefits, schedules and the type of work, so you can decide which suits you better. All figures come from the companies’ own postings and announcements.

Pay: Why the Numbers Are Not Directly Comparable

The two companies publish different kinds of figures. Amazon’s $26.27 is a national average for its Canadian operations employees, effective September 27, 2026; it includes people who have been there for years and does not tell you what a new hire will earn. Walmart’s figures are the starting minimum for specific postings, and they change with the province and the role: in October 2026 we saw $15.85 for a Stock Unloader Associate in Estevan, Saskatchewan, $18.10 for an Overnight Associate in Scarborough, Ontario, and $19.05 for a Bakery Associate in Quebec City. To compare fairly, look at the rate in the actual posting you are considering, for the same city.

Benefits

  • Amazon – its Canadian postings say that benefits can include health care starting on day one, employee discounts, an RRSP match and paid time off, depending on the role. For regular full-time operations employees, Amazon lists extended health, dental and vision coverage and an RRSP plan with an employer match from the first day. From October 1, 2026, eligible employees, including part-time and seasonal operations staff, also get a 10% discount on eligible grocery and essentials purchases on Amazon.ca.
  • Walmart Canada – its postings list stock options, comprehensive benefits, life insurance, paid time off, Live Better U (an education program), a store discount, EQ Health and deferred profit sharing, noting that some depend on hours worked or on full-time or part-time status.

The Work Itself

Amazon warehouse work is physical and focused on processing orders: you will stand and walk for most of the shift, handle packages and use scanners, usually with little contact with customers. Walmart store roles mix physical work and customer contact: stocking shelves, organising departments, preparing online orders and helping shoppers. Walmart postings also describe the physical side; a Produce Stocker posting, for example, mentions standing for extended periods and lifting up to 20 lbs, occasionally up to 50 lbs.

Which One Is Better for You?

Amazon may suit you better if you want full-time hours on a fixed schedule, prefer focused physical work over dealing with customers, can work overnight or on weekends, and there is a fulfilment centre or delivery station you can reach easily.

Walmart may suit you better if you want a job close to home, since there are stores in many more towns, you enjoy helping customers, you need part-time or varied hours, or you are interested in a specific department such as bakery, produce or online grocery.

Many people apply to both and compare the actual offers. Before you decide, check three things in each posting: the hourly rate for that location, the schedule and the physical requirements.

How to Apply

  • Amazon – search for warehouse and operations jobs near you on hiring.amazon.ca, check the shift and pay, then create an account and apply.
  • Walmart Canada – search by job title and city on careers.walmart.ca, open the posting for the store you want and apply online.
