Entry-Level Jobs in Canada for Beginners: Roles That Train You From Day One

Everyone starts somewhere. Many large employers in Canada hire people for their first job and train them on the job, especially in stores, restaurants and warehouses. “No experience” does not mean “no requirements”, though: employers still look for reliability, the right availability and a positive attitude. This guide explains what entry-level employers usually ask for, which roles are open to beginners, what official sources say about pay and training, and how to stand out without a work history.

What “No Experience Required” Really Means

Some postings list no minimum qualifications at all. A recent Walmart Canada posting for a Produce Stocker, for example, stated that there were no minimum qualifications for the position. Even so, employers usually expect:

• Availability for the shifts they need, which often include evenings, weekends or nights
• The ability to do the physical part of the job, such as standing for long periods or lifting
• Basic communication skills in English or French
• Reliability: arriving on time and following instructions
• For some roles, a certificate such as a food handler certificate or, for serving alcohol, provincial training such as Smart Serve in Ontario

Entry-Level Roles Open to Beginners

• Store associate, cashier or stocker – serving customers, stocking shelves and keeping departments tidy. Walmart Canada’s store postings in October 2026 listed minimum hourly rates between $15.85 and $19.05, depending on the province and the role.
• Restaurant team member – taking orders, preparing food and drinks and keeping the restaurant clean. The official Tim Hortons careers site highlights hands-on experience and transferable skills in teamwork, customer service and restaurant operations.
• Warehouse associate – picking, packing and shipping orders, with training on scanners and safety. Amazon announced in September 2026 an average hourly base wage of $26.27 for its Canadian operations employees; this is an average, not a starting rate.
• Grocery clerk – working in departments such as bakery, deli, produce or meat.
• Cleaning and housekeeping – in offices, hotels, hospitals and public buildings.
• General labour – in construction, landscaping or manufacturing, usually with safety training provided by the employer.

Training and Growth

Entry-level jobs at large employers often come with structured training and a clear path to move up:

• Dollarama says that new employees receive training on topics such as technical skills, health and safety, and harassment and discrimination, and that training hours are paid. Its store teams are organised from Store Associate to Team Leader to Store Manager.
• Tim Hortons says that restaurant leaders have access to learning opportunities such as the Operations Skills Management program, and that eligible team members can apply to its scholarship program.
• Walmart Canada lists Live Better U, its education program, among the benefits in its postings, with some benefits depending on hours or employment status.

How to Stand Out Without Work Experience

• Show your skills, not just your jobs. Teamwork, customer service, punctuality and a willingness to learn all matter for entry-level roles.
• Use school, sports and volunteering. They show responsibility and the ability to work with others.
• Be clear about your availability, and be as flexible as you can, especially at the start.
• Get a useful certificate, such as first aid or a food handler certificate, if it fits the jobs you want.
• Ask a teacher, coach or volunteer supervisor to be a reference.
• Apply to several employers close to home, so you have more chances and a shorter commute.

Be Careful With Offers That Seem Too Good

Real entry-level jobs pay a fair hourly wage for real work. Offers that promise high pay for very little effort, that ask you to pay a fee or that arrive by text message for a job you never applied for are common signs of a scam. Apply on the employer’s official website whenever possible.
