InfraOps Support Engineer – Amazon, Vancouver, BC
Amazon is hiring an InfraOps Support Engineer for its Operations Management Center (OMC) in Vancouver, BC. This full-time Tier 1 support role keeps the technology inside Amazon’s corporate offices running, across networking, audio-visual and printing services. The employer is Amazon Development Centre Canada ULC, and the posting lists a base salary range of $57,400 to $95,900 CAD per year.
ABOUT THE JOB
According to Amazon’s posting, the Operations Management Center is a 24/7/365 team that keeps the technology inside more than 400 Amazon corporate office buildings working, across Networking, Audio-Visual (AV) and Print services. The InfraOps Support Engineer is the first line of response for office infrastructure incidents.
The engineer gives high-quality support across all three service areas while starting to build deep expertise in one or more of them. They respond to, triage and resolve incidents within target times using established procedures, detect trends before they become problems, help improve the team’s operating procedures and mentor more junior engineers. Amazon says success in the role requires the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative, shift-based environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Monitor, detect and triage
- Triage incoming incidents (tickets) within the defined target response times, deciding whether to resolve them on the spot or route them to the responsible team.
- Use dashboards, alarms and other tools for Networking, AV and Print services across the global building fleet, and interpret what those signals mean to solve incidents.
- Spot ongoing trends or emerging problems early and define proactive actions to prevent customer impact.
- Assess the scope and severity of incidents, group related incidents into a single parent incident, and prioritize work against SLAs.
Troubleshoot and support
- Provide high-quality Tier 1 support for the products and systems in the team’s scope, resolving straightforward problems with limited documentation and minimal escalation.
- Support critical issues using existing runbooks, staying composed through difficult interactions until the issue is resolved.
- Take part in a rotating on-call schedule and respond to emergent events.
- Escalate when a resolution needs a significant deviation from procedure or when an issue becomes a risk.
Subject-matter expertise
- Develop expertise in one or more focus areas (Networking, AV or Print) and become the technical point of contact for that area within the team.
- Give technical direction to others and share knowledge with users, customers and teammates.
- Lead internal team projects and deliver on defined goals and timelines.
Documentation and operational improvement
- Identify where support documentation and processes can be improved, and write new runbooks, SOPs and knowledge-base articles where gaps exist.
- Suggest improvements to existing and new support tools that increase operational efficiency, and help put them in place.
- Help develop and refine the team’s operational policies and procedures.
Mentoring and collaboration
- Mentor junior engineers, act as a training buddy for new hires and possibly help with hiring.
- Keep good working relationships across Amazon and work with partner teams to solve problems and improve processes.
- Communicate infrastructure health and trends clearly, both in real time and as inputs to weekly and monthly business reviews.
